Amanda contacted me in May 2008 after having been let down by two bespoke designers who promised to make her stationery but never got back to her. The wedding date had been set for 08.08.08. As the day approached, Amanda was beginning to wonder if she would get her theme for her wedding at all, when she stumbled upon D’scribes...
I appeased Amanda’s initial concerns about time constraints and promised to deliver a design for her that would be in keeping with the look she wanted to create and exemplify the flying theme that would tie her day together. Within two weeks I was able to create the design Amanda and Spencer were after with a minimum of fuss on their part via a couple of emails which suited them as they had a very busy schedule and were often out of the country.
Amanda and Spencer are both pilots and wanted to incorporate a flying theme into their wedding, they came to me with a request for a boarding pass style invitation to set the theme off. After a couple of emails I deduced that Amanda was looking for a classic muted look with style, yet maintaining a traditional feel. We opted for matt gold and silver with a 1940’s look for the design and I took inspiration from 1st class travel documents from that era. I even had to learn a little bit of French for an authenticated international feel to the stationery. As Amanda was born in Hong Kong, I decided to incorporate a map of the world into the design with a flight path from Hong Kong to Great Britain, Spencer’s country of birth. I decided that no flying theme was complete without an insignia and set about making one specific to this extraordinary couple. As travel is Amanda and Spencer’s way of life, I used a 1940’s map and compass with wings and ASAir was born! ASAir became the basis for their design, and all their stationery was made to look like it came from this retro flying company. A first class boarding pass style invitation was produced, which was set inside a monogrammed folder; the RSVP was a perforated section on the pass for guests to tear off and post, just like a flight attendant would tear off before boarding the plane. Along with the boarding pass style invitation was an ‘inflight’ information card with details for the guests on how to get to the wedding and accommodation available in the area. To finish off the retro look, the pack was tied up with a silver satin ribbon to match the invitation wording. All of this was produced on an ivory heavyweight card stock with a matt finish in keeping with the retro feel. Amanda and Spencer loved their insignia and the idea of ASAir was carried through to the day itself. I set about creating Orders of Service and ‘inflight’ menu’s using the insignia and old map, again in the muted gold and silver and used a rich, thick silver satin ribbon to tie each item together. I decided to use an unusual fold combination to add a bit of pizzazz to the design which Amanda and Spencer loved – each item was finished off with silver sparkle on the insignia which matched the boarding pass invitation set. I created place settings in the style of ASAir luggage tags which were tied around napkins on the day, and co-ordinating ASAir table names were made for each table which Amanda and Spencer decided to name after different types of planes. I then set about making the table plans to match their theme and so help to co-ordinate the total look of Amanda and Spencer’s flying themed wedding. The stationery items all matched perfectly and every element of the design was created to reflect Amanda and Spencer’s love of flying whilst maintaining a high element of style and elegance in keeping with a sophisticated wedding. I delivered all items on time and in perfect condition. I kept the couple informed of my progress at every stage so they knew I was on the case, particularly important as they had been let down twice before. I thoroughly enjoyed making the stationery for Amanda and Spencer’s big day. They are a lovely couple and they had a few hitches along the way with their plans and arrangements and I made sure that I wasn’t a supplier who would let them down. A wedding is stressful enough and I like to be able to make the stationery aspect an easy and enjoyable experience. I have been a bride myself and know what it is like when things don’t go exactly according to plan!
Amanda and Spencer now have their own insignia to use whenever they want and I added it to bridal notepaper which they used as thank you notes to their guests after the wedding, just to finish off the theme. Their guests were impressed with the stationery too as the couple received many compliments; the invitations managed to create a great first impression and gave the guests an idea of the day to come.
